Project January 2010: CHAIRS FOR TORRO

Members - Les membres > Helping hands... (Eng) > Projects

Torro is a smail village deep inside the country. You'll find it on your way to Karantaba not far from Saba. Most of the people are still living in their small huts without any comfort: no chairs, no beds, no mattres..there is no bakery and if they have chance sometimes a fisherman is bringing them a small fish..

This was the beginning of our new project for January 2010: CHAIRS FOR TORRO

Why this project?

FINANCIAL CRISIS ALL DAY…A WHOLE LIFE LONG !
Do you know how to do?
You are born in The Gambia, one of the poorest countries in Africa. With a little luck you are among the few Gambians having a job and a monthly salary about 1000 dalasis (= €30). But..today one bag of rice costs about 1000 to 1250 dalasis. And one bag is enough for 1 dinner a day to your family during half a month.
And what after this?

AS POVERTY IS AN INJUSTICE
Because of this and so many other testimonies we are voluntary working on different projects since 2000 and our container gifts are supporting:

  • The Youna Primary School at Brikama
  • The Nursery and Primary School at Karantaba
  • The LK Nursery School at Kombo North
  • The Healthcare Centre at Lamin and Kubuneh
  • The rebuilding of a burned down family house in Kubariko
  • The Ancestors School in Koundara (Guinea)
  • The Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital In Banjul

WE NEED YOUR HELP FOR TORRO !

In December 2009 we hope to send a new container. This time our help is going to TORRO, a small village near Saba inside the country.
In Torro you can't find any car, any bike…even a chair. Some men are trying to cultivate vegetables (as tomatoes, onions and cucumbers) in their new small garden, about an hour walking from their houses. In the village there is not one shop, so there is no bread at all. People have rice ONCE a day..with a little luck they sometimes can by a small fish coming from over the river (Senegal)..if it is not yet rotten..
Our next container is going to all people of this village.

WE ARE COLLECTING:

  • stacking chairs
  • beds(single or double) - mattresses - blanckets
  • bikes - gardening tools
  • plastic buckets - inox dinner bowls
  • candles - soap - towels
  • medicines (such as aspirins - plasters - cough syrup…)
  • children clothing - football shirts and balls

The total coast of a container transport is at the moment about €3500 - €4000

Maybe you'd like to sponsor? One message or telephone call can make a big difference for the children in the Gambia.
