We, of course, also see in The Gambia the increase of the Sahel in full dimension. By talking about that phenomenon we thought it is really strange that there are not more trees at the school grounds. Trees are the beginning of a small monoculture, the beginning of life. The large open sand pits around and in the middle of the different buildings of an school are are not necessary. It would be a much healthier place if there were shadowed parts. By cultivating trees and other plants, the children would learn how important trees and other vegetation are. Ellen and Hinke went with this idea to the Vice President of the lower basic school in Tanji. The man, Momodou Djibba, was immediately enthusiastic. Not to plant trees at the middle ground, but a part of the school grounds around the school. The seedlings would then be cared for by the students. And in the end, every child would have its own tree. It is also the idea that the child has the full responsibility for his or her tree and that there will be lessons about. Young trees that are left over because there are too many seedlings, will be given to the school children to take home, plant it there and care for it there, which will give slowly but surely more green in the community. Unfortunately, the first seedlings died because the water pump got out of order. That pump is, however, replaced, and so we are starting again from the beginning. Our idea is to set up this project in several places in the Gambia. Especially in primary schools as the basis for a good understanding of the environment and the value of trees starts right there.
